One of the unfortunate truths about riding a motorcycle, as fun and exhilarating as it can be, is that you face a higher level of risk on the roads. For instance, deciding to ride a bike actually increases your chances of passing away in an accident 22 times over. That’s how much higher the fatal accident rate is for motorcyclists when looking at fatalities per miles driven, as opposed to those in other vehicles.
There are steps you can take to reduce this risk level, such as wearing high-visibility clothing, being a defensive rider and always focusing on safety when you ride. If you obey traffic laws and avoid reckless riding, you can protect yourself.
However, it’s also true that much of the risk you face comes from the drivers around you. It only takes one mistake by another driver to cause a crash.
Other drivers are usually the reason for motorcycle crashes
Many motorcyclists are safe and responsible when they ride, but they still get involved in accidents. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) points out that other drivers are typically at fault. For instance, they note that “the majority of multi-vehicle motorcycle crashes generally are caused when other drivers simply didn’t see the motorcyclist.”
For instance, a left-turn crash happens when the oncoming driver doesn’t see the bike and cuts the motorcycle off when turning across oncoming traffic lanes. A motorcyclist could be riding flawlessly, and he or she could still suffer injuries because of that driver’s negligent mistake.
