As mentioned in a previous post, roundabouts seem like they’re just about everywhere these days – for good reason. They’ve been proven to be more efficient and safer than traditional intersections, especially on high-traffic roads.
That doesn’t mean, however, that everybody is comfortable using them. If you find yourself swallowing hard as you near a roundabout (or going out of your way to avoid them) because you aren’t sure how they work, this is the information you need:
1. Approach with caution
Reduce your speed as you and be prepared to yield to traffic already in the circle. Always keep an eye out for pedestrians and cyclists using designated crosswalks and paths
2. Stop and yield
Wait for a safe gap in the traffic flow before entering. Remember, vehicles within the roundabout have the right of way, and merging smoothly is essential for everyone’s safety.
3. Stick to the right
Most roundabouts are about two lanes wide, but that’s to accommodate larger vehicles – not to divide traffic. Stick to the right so that you can exit at the appropriate spot.
4. Be steady with your speed
Once you’ve safely entered the roundabout, maintain a steady and controlled speed. Avoid abrupt accelerations or decelerations, which can increase the risk of collisions. Consistent speed contributes to the overall efficiency of the roundabout.
5. Remember your turn signal
You have to communicate your intentions to other drivers. Use your turn signals to indicate when you plan to exit the roundabout. Signal right when you’re about to exit – and make sure to turn it off again once you’ve left the roundabout to avoid confusion.
Finally, if you do end up in an accident because someone panicked as they were about to miss their exit or was simply aggressive or distracted, remember that you do have legal options. It’s only reasonable to hold a negligent driver accountable for their mistakes.
