3 things to avoid at an accident scene

On Behalf of | Feb 21, 2025 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

When you are involved in a car accident, you should avoid engaging in certain things, as they can negatively impact your claim if you file one. Although you need to interact with the other driver to exchange information, you should be extra careful during the interaction.

Below are three things to avoid at an accident scene:

1. Yelling

Understandably, you may be angry after being involved in a crash, as someone just acted negligently, endangering you. Accordingly, you may want to yell at them. But this may be unwise. You need to handle the situation calmly, as yelling can make you say something that can be used against you or may escalate the situation.

That’s why it’s recommended to remain in the car for a few minutes after a crash before getting out. After assessing yourself for injuries, you can do breathing exercises to calm down.

2. Apologizing

It’s natural to want to apologize to someone with whom you were involved in an accident. You may do this to express concern or empathy. However, apologizing can be interpreted as an admission of fault by the other driver’s insurance company. If you notice the other driver can’t move or has visible injuries, you can simply say, “Are you alright?” or “Have you called for medical help?”

3. Discussing the accident

You and the other driver should not discuss the accident. Exchange information, take pictures of the scene, and return to your car to wait for the police. Trying to figure out what happened or blaming each other may disadvantage you. You should also avoid discussing the accident with the other driver’s insurance company.

Some drivers make costly mistakes at an accident scene. You need to be cautious about your decisions when involved in a crash.  Legal guidance can help you protect your rights.
