Teens, motorcycles, summer… oh my!

On Behalf of | May 20, 2025 | Motorcycle Accidents

As summer starts to arrive in Ohio, more teens are hitting the roads—and not just behind the wheel of a car. Many young drivers take to motorcycles during the warmer months, drawn by the thrill and freedom of riding. While motorcycles can be exciting, they also come with significant risks, especially for inexperienced teen riders. This mix of youth, speed and summer freedom can lead to serious consequences when safety takes a back seat.

Motorcycle accidents involving teens spike in the summer months, coinciding with school breaks, more leisure time and better weather. Unfortunately, these accidents often result in severe injuries due to the lack of protection motorcycles offer compared to passenger vehicles. Even minor collisions can lead to broken bones, road rash, head trauma and, in some cases, life-altering injuries or fatalities.

What do riders, parents and fellow travelers need to know?

In Ohio, the law requires riders under 18 to wear helmets, and for good reason. Helmets greatly reduce the risk of brain injury and death in a crash. Still, some young riders ignore the law or wear helmets improperly. Add in peer pressure, distractions and/or an overestimation of riding ability, and the risk becomes even greater.

Parents should play an active role in ensuring teen motorcycle riders are properly trained and licensed. Ohio offers a Motorcycle Ohio Basic Rider Skills Course, which is strongly recommended for all new riders. This training helps build foundational skills and improves safety awareness. Parents should also talk openly with their teens about safe riding habits, the dangers of risky behavior and the importance of defensive driving.

For other motorists, it’s also important to stay alert. Motorcycles can be difficult to see, especially at intersections or in blind spots. Drivers should take extra care during summer months, when more teens are on the roads—some of them riding without the maturity or experience to handle emergency situations effectively.

Summer fun should never turn tragic. With education, awareness and accountability, teens and other travelers can enjoy the season more safely.
